Interpersonal Skills - This Skill Set Can Help Your Career

Interpersonal Skills - This Skill Set Can Help Yur CareerInterpersonal Skills - This Skill Set Can Help Your CareerInterpersonal skills, a set of soft skills, allows us to interact with other individuals. They are sometimes called people skills. Verbal communication and listening skills are at the foundation of interpersonal skills, but they go beyond our ability to use words to share information. This skill set also includes being able to negotiate, persuade, and instruct people as well as coordinate our actions with them and read their body language, also known as non-verbal cues. The ability to sympathize and empathize with others, and know when something will offend someone are also interpersonal skills. How to Develop Excellent Interpersonal Skills You may think interpersonal skills are only necessary if your job involves helping other people, persuading them to do or buy something, or managing them. As long as you interact with people in any capacity- that could mean merely working side-by-side with them- interpersonal skills are essential and will contribute to your success in any career. They allow you to get along with our coworkers and bosses, serve your clients and customers (or patients) well, function as a member of a team, take direction from your superiors, and they contribute to your leadership qualities. Not everyone is born with adequate interpersonal skills, but there are ways to improve them. Put yourself into situations that involve interacting with other people. The practice will be helpful. Students should join extracurricular organizations and graduates can become active in community groups. Practice listening and talking to other members, and observing their responses. Volunteer to work on projects. An internship or part-time job will teach you how to interact with customers and coworkers. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will become, and your interpersonal skills will, over time, improve. This survey says these are the top workplace frustrationsThis survey says these are the top workplace frustrationsA new survey conducted by Onepoll on behalf of AVADO, argues that many American employees are underwhelmed with theiroffice culture and the upper management that supervises them. Of the 1,500 employees, 350 HR executives and hiring managers, and 350 C-suite executives questioned, two-thirds of workers reported that their bosses lack fundamental skills, communication being chief among them.Performance and productivity of American workplacesTwo in five employees described their work environment as challenging. The primary constituents that make up office frustration are lack of preparedness and versetzung bias. Seventy-five percent of office employees reviewed in the Onepoll survey said that they were uncertain if their workplace gave them the sufficient training necessary to do their current job. The number of employees that expressed being overwhelmed with their tasks wer e particularly prevalent during times of company reorganization.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreCompany reorganization is when a firm attempts to address major problems or concerns by shifting market focus or overhauling the management and staff hierarchy. This typically occurs after layoffs, department transfers or mergers. More than 40% of HR managers and 47% of employees said that their firm went through a reorganization in the last five years, though only three in ten top managers reporting experiencing reorganization during this time frame.Daniel Johnson-KimStrangely enough,HR executives and hiring managers were found to be the least prepared during these adjustmentperiods. Sixty-nine percent of employees over the age of 51 were found to be more likely to feel unprepared or untrained during a reorganization compared to younger workers between the ages of 18 and 30. Employe es that arent properly briefed during company reorganizationreported feeling, confused, vulnerable and angry.Reorganization can be very unsettling and spark fear in a workforce. But, if handled correctly, it can also be an opportunity to ease employee concerns by showing executive foresight in the form of appropriate training programs objectively carried out by a trusted partner, explainedNiall McKinney, Global President, AVADO.Another commonly cited source of contention was unfair bias. Responses in Onepolls recent study revealed that male employees were much more likely to be promoted during transition periods than female workers, even though the latter often got lumbered with extra responsibilities for the same position. Questions to Ask During a Job Interview

Questions to Ask During a Job InterviewQuestions to Ask During a Job InterviewAfter sending your resume to all the job ads and recruiters you could find, youve nailed an bewerbungsinterview.Thats exciting news, especially considering that only around 2% of applicants actually get called in for an interview. Before you celebrate, theres work to be done before the interview even begins. Interview prep is essential to making sure you seal the deal. Make sure you head to the interview with a prepared list of questions, both general and specific to the sttte. Some hiring managers will even rule candidates out who say they dont have any questions at the end of an interview as it can reveal a lack of interest. Here are some ideas on questions any job applicant should ask during an interview. What does a typical day look like? The job ad should give you a good idea of the roles and responsibilities, but its not always easy to gauge what the day-to-day routine would be. Understanding what your ave rage day will entail can help paint the picture of what life really looks like in this role - and help you decide if its the right fit.If it is an opportunity you find worth pursuit, the answer to this question can also help you identify specific skills or qualifications you should work on to succeed in the role. Why is this position currently open?Dont be afraid to ask this question, despite the fact that it seems rather bold and intrusive. While the employer is not obligated to disclose this information, they are often open.If its a new role, the answer can actually convey a lot of inferred information. New positions that have been open for a while can indicate internal issues, such as disagreeing on the right candidate, a lack of vision for what the role needs to be, or slow internal processes. In the case that its not a new role, the individual who previously held the position might have gotten promoted. Thats a good sign, showing that there is opportunity for growth within the c ompany.Dont just consider the interviewers answer to this question think about what it means for you and what it tells you about the opportunity. Can you tell me about the team?Any individual is only as successful as the team theyre on. Together, you can accomplish more, but poor team dynamics is detrimental to both the work and your morale. It can be hard to determine whether or not youll get along with the team until youre actually working with them. This question can tell you other things about the role, though. If there isnt a team in place, or the interviewer hesitates or seems unsure, that could be a sign that you wont have much support or mentorship. Find out who the position reports to, if and who this role manages and the individuals this role interacts with every day. What is the company culture like?Culture is becoming more important for employees and employers alike, so you want to find a match. Its important to research the company beforehand, and this can give you some insi ght into what the culture is like. However, companies websites and social media channels arent always identical to the real-life dynamic.Asking this question can give you valuable information about the companys core values and how they treat employees. What are the next steps of this process?Asking this last question shows that youre truly interested in the opportunity. It can also help you determine where you stand in their eyes, and if theyre considering other candidates as well. And understanding the rest of their process can help you gauge when and how to follow up.Preparing questions for your interview isa necessityWhether general or specific, it is pivotal that you ask well-researched and thought-provoking questions at the end of your interview. This will show that youre interested in the position and the company. Youll also exhibit confidence revealing that youll be a valuable asset to the team.Get the perfect resume to land your next job interview

Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some indus tries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction .h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National C enter for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Maybe you tended to a sick family member, catered to your kids, pursued another degree, or traveled the world. Whatever it might have been, youre now ready to jump back into the workforce. Not so fast.If yourresume reveals any gaps in employment, expect hiring managers to inquire.Of course, what seems like a simple question will be paired with a simple answer right? You know why you took that time away from your career. But can you clearly explain your decision and how it worked to your advantage? After all, youre vying for a job against candidates who might boast mora recent experience.Instead of getting caught in a bind o f stress and fumbling your words (weve all been there), enter your interview prepared to master your employment gap explanation. Here are six tips to help you overcome the inevitable What have you been up to? interview question.1. Dont overshareIf not properly prepared, a moment of panic could lead to you to divulging way too much information.Does someone whos been sitting behind a desk for 10 years straight, want to hear every detail of your six-month adventure through Asia? Does he or she need to know how you afforded it? Or that a brutal breakup sparked it? Probably not.Nor does the hiring manager want to know the nitty-gritty details of the diapers youve changed or how awful little Tim is before bedtime. If youve faced challenges and were forced to take a gap in employment due to tragedy or hardship, be careful here too.Sometimes people especially mere strangers dont know how to respond when it comes to grief, so spare them. And you certainly dont want to break down in tears duri ng your interview. Try to keep those details to yourself or between you and your therapist.2. Offer an explanationYou definitely dont want toovershare, but dont cloak yourself in mystery, either.Instead, find the right balance. Explain you took time off to spend with your kids, needed to decompress after several high-pressure years in your field, or that you faced little choice and owed it to your mom to help her out. Theres no shame in that.By explaining why you elected to call it quits for a while (without oversharing), a hiring manager will likely feel more comfortable knowing what happened and that you didnt just run away.Important note Remember theres a difference between explaining and justifying. Dont get stuck feeling like you have to justify why you stepped away from your career. Youre not out to prove anything.3. Highlight new skillsUnfortunately, changing a diaper in under a minute doesnt count as a new skill set (though that is a commendable feat).Be sure to mention any volunteer work, classes, certifications, or even conferences you attended during your employment gap. If none of those options are relevant, know you probably picked up a new soft skill.Generalsoft skillsinclude communication, adaptability, problem solving, and critical observation. Remember toshow, not tell. Offer concrete examples and situations that show how you learned to better communicate or how you became more comfortable adapting to unexpected situations.Being able to show youve grown during your employment gap is respectable, so dont forget to highlight it.RelatedTop Transferable Job Skills Employers Look for in Candidates4. Emphasize why nows the timeIf you stepped away from your career without a concise timeline tied to your reasoning, explain why youre choosing to re-enter the workforce now instead of, say, a year from now.Again, be concise and dont feel like you have to justify your decision. Simply let the hiring manager know that youve done what you needed to do duri ng your time off and now youre ready and raring to get back to work.5. Be confidentYou need to be 100 percent confident in yourself and your employment gap explanation. If you show uncertainty in your decision, the hiring manager might feel a little unsure, too.Dont downplay what youve been up to, either. Youonlycared for your sick mother? Thats a heavy task. Youonlytook care of your two kids? Thats no easy feat. Youonlywent back to school for your masters degree? Thats a big deal. Own your decision and explain it clearly and confidently.6. Move onAt this point, youre probably wondering how long this explanation is going to last.Theres no reason to dwell on your employment gap. Sure, its right there on your resume, so prepare to address it, but dont feel as though you need to acknowledge it for more than a minute or two. Again, offer an explanation, highlight the positive outcomes of your decision, and explain why youre ready to strike up your career again. Dont overshare and dont s pend time trying to justify your decision.Chances are, the timespan of your employment gap is a lot shorter than the amount of experience you actually have, so theres no need to let this brief moment of time define you or what youre capable of bringing to a company.
